Hungary’s nationalist PM calls for reunification of 15-mil Magyars

[poll id="2"]

Hungary’s new Prime Minister Viktor Orban has always voiced that he will be the premier for an estimated 15 million Hungarians worldwide. This has raised eyebrows in neighboring countries and the European Union (of which Hungary has been a member of since May 1, 2004) as they fear the conservative PM may renew old historical Hungarian territorial claims – because most of the 5 million Magyars living outside the borders of modern day Hungary were forced to do so against their will in neighboring countries. The fact that the European Union (EU) may not agree, is irrelevant on the issue of Hungarian reunification as Orban has in the past voiced that “there is life outside the EU.”

In 2004 Orban had called on the Hungarian population to unite 15 million Hungarians worldwide. But his initiative failed after the nation was misled by corrupt socialist Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany, who opposed a referendum on giving Dual citizenship to all Magyars.

Much to Orban’s dismay Gyurcsany conned millions of Hungarians viewing his live pre-referendum address on national television, where he pompously announced, “I’m so fed up about the whole issue (referendum) that I’m not even going to vote.” The very next day he went and voted against the idea, while millions of monkey-see-monkey-do Hungarians stayed at home causing that referendum to exit with the lowest turnout (38%) in modern Hungarian history. Despite 51% of voters were in favor of Dual citizenship, low voter turnout had jeopardized the cause.

The Socialist trick had worked and the Gyurcsany government secured its politically wobbling position for another four years at the elections of 2006. However dodgy-ness caught up with the undermining Socialist cadres and this year in April their social-liberal rule was toppled after they were thrashed by the centre-right party Fidesz Civic Party, who won with a two-thirds majority. This mandate permits Fidesz to execute its plans including its former pledge to grant every ethnic Hungarian and their descendents dual citizenship.

For the record, as punishment for its involvement in World War One, European leaders met in Paris and drew up what they called the 1920 Treaty of Trianon. The decided to randomly pull a line of borders and carved up what was known as Greater Hungary (see picture) into smaller units, creating new independent states like Slovakia , Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia – giving away a giant chunk to Romania. This way Greater Hungary lost two-thirds of its pre-war territory and one-third of its remaining population. Although Hungarians in general agree today that the Trianon agreement was very unjust (other perpetrators weren’t punished as severely as Hungary, which was paralyzed economically and geographically as most of its former bustling cities landed up outside of its diminished territory), the majority have acknowledged their fate and in a strong turnout euphoric referendum voted a whopping 80% in favor of joining the EU giving up all earlier historical territorial claims.

1,563,000 in United States . That will a teritorial claim to Obama?

What people in Hungary (or at least some journalists) tend to forget is that the majority of people living in the territories lost by Hungary in the aftermath of WW1 were not Hungarians, and that the same people were very outraged with the oppressive and assimilating policies carried out by the Hungarian government in the previous decades. Great Hungary imploded as a balloon much like Yugoslavia which was also disconsidering its minorities before it imploded. So the fault for Trianon lies not in Western Europe but in Hungary’s anti-minority policies carried out until WW1 happened, which was the best opportunity for a lot such minorities to break away.

      Dear Adrien,

I would be curious as to your sources for ethnic distribution in pre-war Hungary, and minority policies. I’m quite certain the Habsburgs didn’t want non-Hungarians to assimilate into the Hungarian majority – just not in their interest!

      Regards,
      Andars

        Hello,

You may check the 1910 census made in Austria-Hungary.

In Transylvania there were 2,831,222 Romanians (53.8%) and 2,431,273 others (mostly Hungarians – 1,662,948 (31.6%) and Germans – 563,087 (10.7%)) The 1919 and 1920 censuses In Romania’s Transylvania indicate a greater percentage of Romanians (57.1%/57.3%) and a smaller Hungarian minority (26.5%/25.5%)
In Slovakia in 1910 census there were 1,687,977 Slovaks and 1,233,454 others (mostly Hungarians – 886,044, Germans, Ruthenians and Roma) According to the 1921 census, however, there were 1,941,942 Slovaks and 1,058,928 others

I’ve heard that italians want to rebuild the Roman Empire and they have territorial claims to all european countries. In fact, EU will be dead and renamed Roman Empire.

    Dear Andrew(engl. for Andras),

please consider the following from Wikipedia :

Magyarization (also Magyarisation, Hungarisation, Hungarization, Hungarianization, Hungarianisation) is a designator applied to a number of ethnic assimilation policies implemented by various Hungarian authorities in the 19th century and at the beginning of 20th century. These policies aimed at imposing or maintaining the dominance of Hungarian language and culture in Hungarian-ruled regions by encouraging or compelling people of other ethnic groups to adopt the Hungarian language and culture, and to develop a Hungarian identity.

Hope your curiosity is now satisfied !

    All the best, norocel (W.Germany)

Whether you choose to believe Wikipedia or not is your call norocel.

However, even in wikipedia, it’s unclear and vague what the “Hungarian authorities” were doing.

Personally, I don’t see any problems with friendly encouraging of the adoption of Hungarian culture for minorities living in Hungary.

Well, it´s an anthropological-social and cultural fact, and well done accepted fact that a country has his borderlines, where other language is spoken.
It´s not about the territory, people are other chunks. Give the land back to Hungary, where there is people speaking hungarian.
Furthermore, Trianon is not the end of this thread. Consider Romanian Invasian of Transilvania and Russian ocupation of Rutenia, now as being part of Ukraine.
I´m in favour to at least give the dual citizenship for those outlanders, and reasonable to give back the land. Since When frenches and britishes understand something about spltiing countries? War in Bosnia, War in Palestine, War in everyplace else who had this same kind of problem. Very advanced “civilized” way to solve this problem.

    • http://www.facebook.com/budapestreport Andras Badics

Hey there David, thanks for the comment.

Agree with you completely. In this part of the world language distribution is one of the things that’s pretty much stayed the same for hundreds of years, and could be used as border guidelines.

it is not French,or British property to give way, so that belong to HUNGARY and will bee for ever !

Anybody can check the official censuses of Transilvania’s population before ww1. Transilvania had a majority romanian population. This is a fact and can be easily verified. This mostly romanian population was living under the austro hungarian empire. Hungarians in Transilvania were, according to official data aproximately 30% of the entire population but in fact much less because of the fact that many people declared to be hungarian or they were treated as lower citizens by the hungarian power in place. So, as anybody can check the facts, my question is- what territory did hungarians lose in 1920 if we take into account that they formed 25-30% of the population? THAT WAS NOT HUNGARIAN TERRITORY! Trianon was in fact JUSTICE for the european peoples of eastern/central Europe freed from the chains of medieval austro-hungarian empire.

    • http://www.budapestreport.com/ Andras M. Badics

You might think that the acquisition of territory has benefited your country. However, looking at the economic state of both Hungary and Romania today, I am certainly skeptical on the “results” of the Versailles treaty – no matter who is right about borders.

      • lvl100

You`re looking at 2 states, one slightly less bankrupt than the other . And your point is ?

        • http://www.budapestreport.com/ Andras M. Badics

My point should be clear from what I’ve said. What’s you point?

  • Solution Man

    The solution is simple:
1/ Hungary must leave the EU.
2/ Central part of Hungary will become an independent state of Gypsies or Rom.
3/ Then Budapest can declare war on its neighbours and take the lands it wants. It can even win more lands and exterminate even more people than it did when it was part of the Nazi alliance in world war II.

    • Lejobban

pretty sure Hungary defended europe from many invasion from huns and ottomans earning recognition from the pope as the shield of christianity and the defender of western civilisation. Serbians assassinated the archduke of hungary and didn’t meet the demands made by hungary to make up for it. Hungary then declared war on Serbia. russia and serbia were allies. germany and Hungary were allies. France and britain decided that hungary and germany were in the wrong. everyone ganged up on germany and hungary and because the allies won they were automatically the good guys despite serbia triggering the war. also say 30% of transylvania was hungarian the let hungary keep 30%?? Just saying its not all so cut and dry. there are a lot of factors involved and the solution is only simple for people who are simple.
