Fidesz captures two thirds in historic win

No party has, since the change of regime in Hungary, managed to rake-in the votes to form government alone, without coalition. This time though, Fidesz – Hungarian Civic Union has gained support that enables it to do that and more.

Winning 54 constituencies out of 57 in the second round on Sunday (at 90.83 percent voter turnout), the party has gained a two thirds majority overall, which will anoint it with maximum governmental power including altering the constitution.

Party President Viktor Orban had run on a platform of major job-creation and tax cut to boost economic growth, as well as restructuring of Hungary’s IMF loans.

In his victory address, Orban said “revolution” took place in voting rooms across Hungary, erasing the power of the Hungarian “oligarchs.” The new system, he said, will be based on national solidarity and economic growth.

Hungarian Socialist Party (MSzP) President Ildiko Lendvai congratulated Fidesz at 9 pm. Lendvai suggested Fidesz’s two thirds majority is a danger to Hungary’s democratic system, and pledged to take action to defend the current political establishment.

Despite this, MSzP has let down its supporters in many respects, she said, and resigned from her Presidency.
