Hungary mourns Polish tragedy
Monday, April 19th, 2010The Hungarian flag in front of the Parliament on Kossuth square flew half-staff on Saturday, accompanied by the playing of the national anthem during the Government’s ceremony mourning Polish President Lech Kaczynski’s tragic death on April 10.
Dignitaries including President Laszlo Solyom, outgoing PM Gordon Bajnai, Speaker of the House Bela Katona layed wreaths at the remembrance site, which displays an engraving listing names of all the victims who lost their lives.
The event was also attended by foreign ambassadors, party officials and representatives of Polish cultural and political institutes in Hungary.
Church ceremonies were also held across Hungary. Hungarian Cardinal Peter Erdo held mass in the Bazilika, joined by Janusz Juliusz, Polish-born Apostolic Nuncio (envoy) of the Vatican.
Hungary has also appointed the date April 17 as the national day of remembrance commemorating the Polish tragedy.
